Derinees Jantjies was born and grew up on a small farm just outside Citrusdal. She completed her Grade 9 at Citrusdal primary but due to financial circumstances she could not continue her schooling and started to work on a farm as seasonal worker. But Derinees had bigger dreams for her future and when the opportunity came about for her to complete her matric at West Coast College she grabbed it with both hands. She enrolled for the National Certificate Vocational Office Administration course. The purpose of this programme is to equip the students with knowledge and skills for successful entry into an administrative secretarial field in any sector. This programme integrates theoretical learning with practical skills. The course takes 3 years to complete.

After graduating in 2011 she worked at various institutions as an Office Administrator which included the Cederberg Municipality and Paardekop Primary but she had a dream, to reach and teach the youth of our communities.

Derinees became even more determined to further her education and decided to enrol for the ECD learnership at West Coast College Citrusdal campus. After completing her Level 5 she started to work as class Assistant at Citrusdal Primary. She is now busy completing her Diploma in Early Childhood Development through CPUT. This will be her last year. She is now working as a Grade R teacher at Citrusdal Primary and loving what she is doing.

Her message to others out there who could not complete their matric is that there is hope in doing the National Certificate Vocational program at a TVET college and that the TVET sector can open new doors and possibilities for you. “I want to praise West Coast College for the quality education they give to their students and would definitely encourage others to further their studies through them”
