West Coast College is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of three of its artisans who were recognised at the 2nd South African National Artisan Awards (SANAAs) held at the Radisson Blu Hotel OR Tambo on 5 September 2026.

The three West Coast College nominees each achieved a podium position in their respective artisan categories, highlighting the exceptional skills, dedication and commitment of artisans who have developed their expertise through technical and vocational education and training.

The award recipients are:

  • Romario Arendse – Welding: First Place
  • Emoshene Moore – Pipe Fitting: Second Place
  • Xolisa Solo – Boilermaking: Third Place

The achievements represent a significant milestone for the three artisans, as well as for West Coast College, which continues to play an important role in developing skilled artisans who contribute to industry, communities and the broader South African economy.

Speaking about his achievement, Romario Arendse, who currently serves as a Senior Welder at Tronox, said the award was a deeply meaningful recognition of his journey and commitment to his profession: “This award is deeply meaningful to me, as it recognises the hard work, dedication, and commitment I have demonstrated throughout my career. It motivates me to continue developing my skills and maintaining the highest standards of performance in my role as a Senior Welder at Tronox.”

Arendse said the recognition also provides him with an opportunity to use his experience to encourage young people to consider careers in the artisan trades.

“This recognition also provides me with a broader platform as an artisan and, now, as an artisan ambassador. I hope to use this opportunity to inspire young people to pursue careers in the artisan trades and demonstrate that hard work, passion, and commitment can lead to a fulfilling and successful career.”

For Arendse, the achievement is also a reminder of his personal journey and the importance of remaining grounded while continuing to grow.

“It also reminds me of where I came from and how far I have come. Knowing my roots and recognising where I am today keeps me grounded, grateful, and motivated to continue progressing while helping others believe in what they can achieve.”

He added that the award represents more than an individual achievement.

“For me, this award represents more than personal achievement. It is an opportunity to continue growing professionally, make a meaningful contribution, and give back to the trade that has played such an important role in my career.”

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Arendse said he was proud to represent his College, his region and his workplace.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity, also proud to represent my College, region and my work to show what hard work can achieve.”

West Coast College Principal, Mr Lungisa Mbulawa, congratulated all three artisans on their achievements and highlighted the significance of their success for the College and the communities it serves.

“West Coast College is very proud and honoured to have produced these three award-winning artisans who not only represent the College with distinction at their workplace but also represent the College in their various fields, cementing the College as a College that produces award-winning artisans that contribute to the growth of communities and the economy of the country.”

The success of Arendse, Moore and Solo demonstrates the value of artisan development and the important role that TVET institutions play in preparing skilled professionals for the world of work.

Their achievements further reinforce the message that artisan careers offer young South Africans meaningful opportunities for professional growth, economic participation and contribution to the development of the country.

West Coast College extends its sincere congratulations to Romario Arendse, Emoshene Moore and Xolisa Solo on their exceptional achievements at the 2nd SANAAs.

Their success is a source of great pride for the College and serves as an inspiration to current and prospective students to pursue excellence, develop their skills and recognise the opportunities that a career in the artisan trades can provide.
