ASEZ and West Coast College host Women in Engineering Event.

‘Strike a woman, strike a rock! These words from the famous resistance song symbolize courage and strength. These symbolic words were solidified and clearly expressed throughout the activities at the Women in Engineering TedTalk/conference presented by the Atlantis Special Economic Zone in collaboration with the West Coast TVET College, held on 23 August 2022 at Kerria Primary School.

The purpose of this conference is to bring awareness and recognition of the outstanding and continuous contribution of women in engineering, Greentech, and artisanal careers, the challenges women face in these careers, how to overcome them, and how to access further opportunities in advancing their careers in the engineering and the Greentech sectors.

A jammed-pack programme of transformational education, motivation, encouragement, slam poetry, and choral music was presented to the female engineering and artisanal students of West Coast College and the grade-7 girls of Kerria Primary school. The essence of the message by the phenomenal female speakers to the attendees was ‘take control of your own narrative’ despite the challenges faced by women and girl-children in contemporary society to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Having the grade-7 girls of Kerria Primary school attend the conference was a great awareness campaign to raise the future profile of women in engineering and the Greentech sector and focus the attention on the spectacular career opportunities available to girls in these exciting industries.

The Atlantis Special Economic Zone continuously explores ways to fulfil its benefits of social inclusion; revitalizing the community; securing future generations; helping to build the future and community stakeholder networking. With this in mind, the sparkle in the eyes of the grade-7 girls, students, guest speakers, and other stakeholders at this event was apparent of these benefits. We will continue to inform, educate, as well as build, and strengthen relationships through events such as the Women in Engineering TedTalk/conference. By developing our girl children, acknowledging equality, and celebrating the many strong, smart confident, innovative, talented, and beautiful women out there in the Greater Atlantis.
