In a powerful demonstration of commitment to employee wellbeing, the Malmesbury Campus of a West Coast TVET College recently hosted a vibrant and impactful Staff Wellness Day; an event that underscores the importance of holistic support within the technical and vocational education sector.

The event, held in partnership with the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) and the college’s Human Resources (HR) Department, brought together personnel from the Malmesbury and Atlantis Campuses, along with staff from the Central Office. The initiative aimed to promote physical, mental, and emotional health among employees – a timely move in today’s fast-paced and high-demand educational environment.

Staff had access to a wide range of health screenings provided by GEMS, including BMI assessments, waist circumference checks, blood pressure monitoring, and cholesterol and blood sugar level testing. Importantly, HIV counselling and testing services were also available, contributing to broader health awareness and proactive care.

Recognising the mental and physical strain often experienced in the workplace, the event also offered neck and shoulder massages, giving staff a much-needed moment of relaxation and stress relief. The day was not only about awareness but also about action, encouraging employees to take tangible steps towards improved health.

The presence of Assupol, a trusted insurance provider, added further value to the event by guiding interested staff through insurance options and policy applications. This blend of health and financial wellness resources reflects a well-rounded approach to staff care.

Speaking about the event, organisers expressed gratitude to GEMS, Assupol, and the HR team for their collaborative efforts. “Initiatives like these are a vital part of fostering a healthier, more resilient workplace,” one staff member noted, adding that the day had sparked renewed interest in personal wellbeing among attendees.

This wellness event is a shining example of how South Africa’s TVET Colleges are not only equipping students with critical skills for the future but also setting a benchmark in employee care and institutional sustainability. As the sector continues to grow in importance and reach, such efforts send a clear message: staff wellness is a strategic priority, not a luxury.

With TVET institutions playing a key role in national development, ensuring the health and resilience of their workforce is not just commendable — it’s essential.
