LEARNERSHIPS AND SKILLS PROGRAMMES
West Coast College plays a critical role in providing skills for socio economic
development on the West Coast through education and training, which not only include
the National Certificate Vocational (NCV), but also Learnerships and Skills Programmes.
These programmes are designed for communities to unlock their economic potential
with relevant skills that will create jobs and self employment.
The Linkage and Partnerships Unit (LPU)
The Linkage and Partnerships Unit (LPU) initiates and drives programmes with various stakeholders in industry. The LPU is involved in the following:
- Establish training and development needs of industry and communities
- Establish and maintain links with external stakeholders
- Accreditation of qualifications with the relevant SETAs
- Gaining programme approval or accreditation of qualifications with the relevant SETAs/other qualifications bodies
- Facilitate implementation and quality assurance of Learnerships
- Facilitate implementation of apprenticeships
- Facilitate trade test readiness
- Gaining programme approval of skills programmes with the relevant SETAs
- Accreditation of skills programmes with the relevant SETAs
- Facilitate implementation and quality assurance of skills programmes
- Development of business plans and proposals
- Assessment and moderation
- Curriculum Development
- Recognition of Prior Learning
- Mentorship and Coaching
What is a Learnership?
A Learnership is a work-based education and training programme that consist of structured
theoretical education and workplace training/experience with a minimum duration
of one year. It can result in a nationally recognized qualification; offers practical
workplace experience and can fast track the development of an employed person in
an existing work place.

         3. National Certificate in Welding Levels 2
         4. National Certificate Fitting and Machining Level 2
         5. National Certificate Fitting and Turning Level 2
         6. National Certificate Machining Level 2, 3 and 4
         7. National Certification Fabrication Level 2
         8. National Certificate Automotive Level 2; and
         9. National Certificate New Venture Creation Level 2
         4. National Certificate in Early Childhood Development Levels 1, 4 and 5
         11. International Certificate Drivers Licence
         12. Institute of Certificate Bookkeepers
               a. Certificate: Junior Bookkeeping
               b. Certificate: Senior Bookkeeping
               c. National Diploma: Technical Financial accounting Level 5
               d. Certificate: Office Administration Level 5

Skills Programmes
It is a cluster of unit standards (modules) selected from a qualification, which
is occupationally directed and results in obtaining credits towards an NQF registered
qualification. The duration of a skills programme can range from two days to six
months. We can design tailor made accredited skills programmes that will suit the
need of the client and deliver on site if required.

International Welding School of Excellence
The Vredenburg campus hosts an International Welding School of Excellence. West
Coast College is the first FET College in South Africa to be awarded this prestigious
Centre, which is a joint initiative of the Western Cape Education Department, SA
Institute of Welding and the Mechanical and Engineering Related Sectoral Education
and Training Authority (Merseta).
Any student graduating from this welding school gets awarded a qualification that
is internationally recognized.
The Welding School offers the following welding programmes:
- TIG: Tungsten Arc Welding of Aluminium
- MIG: Metal Inert Gas Welding of Aluminium
- MMG: Manual Metal Arc Welding of Carbon and Stainless Steel
- MAG: Metal Active Gas Welding of Carbon and Stainless Steel
