NATIONAL CERTIFICATE VOCATIONAL (NCV)


The National Certificate Vocational (NCV) qualification gives grades 9, 10 and 11 learners, or other learners not older than 35 years, an alternative by offering industry focused training. The NCV runs over three full years.

This is a full year programme, offering levels 2, 3 and 4; and the student is issued with a certificate on successful completion of each level of study. The programmes offer integrated theoretical and practical experience; and exposure to your chosen industry. It provides you with an opportunity to make a career change with the skills you will gain.

PROGRAMMES

West Coast College provides for a variety of options for students who wish to enter the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) programmes. In order to obtain an NCV qualification, a student is required to take a total of seven subjects, of which three are compulsory (ie Language, Maths Literacy/Mathematics and Life Orientation) and four can be chosen from the different programmes.

Hospitality Studies

Subjects: Food Preparation, Hospitality Generics, Hospitality Services and Client Services and Human Relations. It provides the student with skills to operate as a cook or chef, waitron or accommodation assistant in various establishments, including hotels, restaurants and guest houses. Offered at Vredendal and Malmesbury.

Office Administration

Subjects: Business Practice, Office Practice, Office Data Processing, Applied Accounting, Personal Assistant or New Venture Creation. This programme equips the student to enter an administrative secretarial field in any sector. Administration competencies apply to all industries - the formal and informal commercial sectors.

Skills and competencies include coordinating office correspondence; type letters, reports and minutes; perform receptionist duties; coordinate and organize functions; organize meetings and staff travel itineraries; and perform accounting duties. Offered at all campuses.

Management

Subjects: Management Practice, Operations Management, Financial Management and Entrepreneurship and Project Management. It is aimed at students who want to study managerial subjects for further learning or employment in a management field.

The student will be able to assist with communication management in an organization, personnel management; managing productivity; change and transformation management; and project management. Offered at Atlantis and Vredendal Campuses.

Education and Development

Subjects: Learning Psychology, Human and Social Development, Art and Science of Teaching and Early Childhood Development. This programme will equip a student to enter the workplace as an assistant ECD teacher, au pair worker, assistant community worker, assistant nursing staff for old age homes and care centres and child minding careers.

They can also enter ECD Occupational or Learnership Programmes to be qualified as Grade R teachers. Offered at Vredenburg, Vredendal, Malmesbury and Atlantis.

Engineering and Related Design

Subjects: Engineering Fundamentals, Engineering Technology, Engineering Systems, Engineering Graphics and Design, Fitting and Turning, Automotive Repair and Maintenance and Engineering Fabrication.

This covers all aspects of engineering and related design in the mechanical, geological and fabrication fields. The course integrates academic knowledge and theory with practical skills and drawings. The student should be able to participate in designing and constructing buildings; manufacturing of tools, engines and machines; extract equipment and processes to produce components; and interpret and produce engineering drawings.

What the different campuses offer: Fitting and Turning (Atlantis and Vredendal); Automotive (Citrusdal and Vredendal); Fabrication (Vredenburg); and Welding (Vredenburg and Atlantis).

Electrical Infrastructure Construction

Subjects: Electrical Principles and Practices, Workshop Practice, Electronic Control and Digital Electronics, Electrical Systems and Construction and Electrical Workmanship.

This programme covers heavy current, overhead power lines as well as domestic, civil and industry; digital and electronics in communications, industrial electronics and sound engineering fields as well as instrumentation.

Upon qualification the student should be able to work at a power station, work as an electrician, technician at a communications company or work as technician at a theatre. Offered at the following campuses: Citrusdal, Atlantis, Vredendal and Vredenburg.
